We hope you all are staying healthy, doing well, and keeping your spirits up during this challenging time. We miss seeing and spending time with our soccer families, and we look forward to when we can all reunite on the soccer fields soon! With that being said, your family’s safety is of our utmost priority, and although we can’t wait to see you all playing soccer with us soon, we will not rush into any decisions without thoroughly weighing all options to ensure our families’ safety and health remain top priority. We thank you for your patience as the USL Board of Directors has deliberated on various avenues for the future of USL recreational offerings.
As you are aware, the latest revision to Governor Whitmer’s "Stay Home, Stay Safe" Executive Order has been extended to Thursday, May 28, 2020. Michigan State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) initially set the new return-to-play date as June 1, 2020, but with conditions changing weekly, they will be reviewing this return-to-play date every two-weeks to evaluate if any further adjustments need to be made.
Given this direction and timeframe, USL has made the difficult decision to cancel Recreational Spring League. However, we are continuing to evaluate and develop various new models that would allow for a possible Summer Recreational program to be played in July, 2020. We are hopeful that this can be achieved, but as you are aware, many factors and variables will determine how we can accomplish this with ultimate safety to our players, parents, and coaches.
On May 7th, the State of Michigan introduced a 6-phase Michigan Safe Start Plan to assist in re-engaging all activities. We anticipate that additional guidelines will be introduced and provided that specifically target athletic activities and participation. This information will be an integral and key factor in our planning.
As you may know, United Soccer League was formed in 1975 as a non-profit organization committed to giving children in southeast Michigan an opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of soccer in a safe and friendly environment. Over 45 years later, we are 100% still committed to this statement. We will continue to share updates with all USL members as COVID-19 guidelines evolve day-to-day. This is a difficult time for all of us, but please trust we will get through this together. This is a temporary situation and we look forward to the day that soccer returns to our youth and team-gatherings are celebrated once again!
